Your Grace,
I would lke to respond to your 'practical and restorative' suggestion:

A recent excellent op-ed article in the Cape Times raised the possibility of converting the old Athlone power station into an engineering college workshop for young people to learn simple as well as advaced engineering skills. this would offer large engineneering firms an opportunity to invest funds and skills to very practical purposes with great potential.

To me this would be opportunity 'to do the right thing' as you put it so very aptly.
Walter Loening.

True restitution and reconciliation starts at the Cross of Jesus Christ. He is the only source through which we can forgive and be forgiven. Any effort from a human perspective will fail. Without Jesus Christ the problem will not be solved.

Many thanks for this initiative. It is indeed something that has been long overdue and critical for us as South Africans. Perhaps this effort might assist in working towards leveling the playing fields. Whilst we are not that optimistic in the light of crime and corruption that has become endemic, we are still of the view that any effort during these trying times is still worth it.

Thank you for reminding us of this ghastly occurrence and in particular the lack of visible response of the White community.
It might be a salutary exercise for group of representatives of all the major Christian denominations in Worcester to embark on a search for the survivors of the victims and their families at present. If they were to go out to the homes of these people in mixed groups of for example three representatives to establish the spiritual, social and physical wellbeing of these people at present it could have a profound effect on all participants.
It may well call for an extensive process of healing of memories.

This is a very caring response. I am not happy about the fact that the wealthy (corporations and individuals) could simply buy their way out of guilt and responsibility - it takes more than that. It takes a caring ACTION. This needs further thought.

This looks fantastic. Be encouraged and press on. When my husband and I worked to run the SYMSA conferences prior to the 94 elections, we knew God was challenging us to prepare Christians for a new and different role in the future of South Africa. A think tank like you have is a melting pot of ideas out of which great vision can come for constructive change going forward. May God bless you as you meet and share. God save Africa!!

Hi Sandy
I agree with you re the elitism of our profession and the need for structural changes. I am also a teacher of narrative practices and work at multiplying my skills by teaching to various professionals working in the field of counselling - pastoral therapists, social workers, pastors etc. If we take into account that more than 80% SA 'ns belong to faith communities, I feel hopeful about what can be achieved by developing the skills of people who work in the contexts of faith communities. You might like to check out my website: elize@elizemorkel.co.za. It is a drop in the ocean, but I do see ripples that I find encouraging.
Nice to be connected!
Thanks for responding.
Warmly
Elize
